The MASA Executive Board recently appointed Louis Steigerwald, superintendent of Norway-Vulcan Area Schools, to an open two-year term on the AASA Governing Board. Steigerwald was unanimously selected from more than two dozen MASA member applicants interested in filling the vacant position to serve as the fourth Michigan representative on the Governing Board for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years. He joins fellow MASA members Dr. Daveda Colbert, Dr. Steve Matthews, and Dave Tebo.

Steigerwald has served 30 years in education, including the last nine years as Superintendent of the rural U.P. district of Norway-Vulcan Area Schools. He’s also served as high school principal at South Lake Schools in St. Clair Shores, curriculum director in Oscoda Area Schools, and spent 14 years in the classroom as head of the English Department at Cass Technical High School in Detroit. Steigerwald earned his both his bachelor’s in English and education specialist degrees from Wayne State University. He is an active MASA member, having served in Region 1 as President, Vice President, and Treasurer, as well as on the MASA Council.

The AASA Governing Board meets twice annually – in the winter just prior to the National Conference on Education and in the summer in the Washington, D.C., area. The Governing Board is responsible for nominating the president-elect candidates. Governing Board members are expected to assist with membership recruitment and retention for both MASA and AASA, as well as to assist in promoting AASA conferences and webinars to members.
