The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued guidance to limit in-person events of 50 people or more for the next 8 weeks. In observance of this instruction and in light of the current health and safety concerns we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Women in Leadership Conference, April 30-May 1, 2020. We know that you share in our disappointment to have to cancel this event, but please know that we are looking for ways to reconvene this group in the future. Thank you for understanding, and look for more communications from us regarding future Women’s Leadership Network events.

Keynote Speakers

Attorney General Dana Nessel

A former criminal prosecutor and civil rights attorney, Dana Nessel was sworn in as Michigan’s 54th Attorney General on January 1, 2019.  Her core initiatives have been fashioned in the image of her promise to Michigan’s residents — to give the Department of Attorney General back to the people that it serves.

Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack

Chief Justice McCormack joined the Michigan Supreme Court in January 2013, and became the Chief Justice in January 2019.

As the Chief Justice, McCormack has promoted statewide initiatives devoted to improving the courts service to the public, and in particular delivering on a promise that courts are independent, accessible, engaged with their communities and efficient. For example, together with the Attorney General, she launched an Elder Abuse Taskforce, which is actively working on improvements to the service to seniors in courts.  Additional successful initiatives by Chief Justice McCormack include the Michigan Access for all Taskforce, Online Dispute Resolution throughout Michigan’s courts, the first expungement clinics in the state, and Michigan’s participation in the Regional Judicial Opioid Initiative (RJOI).

Chief Deputy State Superintendent Sheila Alles

Sheila Alles is the Chief Deputy Superintendent for the Michigan Department of Education, resuming her position after serving as the Interim State Superintendent.

In May 2018, the State Board of Education appointed Sheila as the Interim State Superintendent following the passing of State Superintendent, Brian Whiston.  She was the first woman of state superintendents in almost 200 years and served in this position for 15 months until the appointment in August 2019 of Dr. Michael Rice as State Superintendent.

Sheila Alles was the Chief Deputy Superintendent for the Michigan Department of Education from March 2017 to May 2018.  One of her biggest priorities is to continue the implementation of Michigan’s Strategic Plan to become a Top 10 Education State in 10 years.
