New survey offers insights into parent-teacher communication

Parenting magazine and the National Education Association recently released the results of a groundbreaking joint survey of 1,000 public school parents and educators that explored roadblocks to effective parent-teacher communication. When parents were asked to “grade” their relationship with their child’s teachers, nearly half (45 percent) gave the teachers an “A,” with the majority on both sides categorizing the relationship as “great” and “open.” But despite the strong relationships, the survey revealed that the two sides differ on some key issues and have different ideas and expectations about how to keep communication lines open.

School administrators should find the results helpful in assessing local communication efforts. The results can serve as a discussion guide for teacher groups, parent groups, and teacher-parent groups or as a model to fashion a similar survey to use in assessing local teacher-parent perceptions.
