The Competitive FIRST (VEX) Grant Program is available to school districts in an effort to improve mathematics, science, and technology skills by participating in events hosted by FIRST in Michigan, REC, or Science Olympiad. The intent of the $3,000,000 grant is to increase the number of pupils demonstrating proficiency in science and mathematics on the state assessments and to increase the number of pupils who are college-and career-ready upon high school graduation. The competitive FIRST Robotics Grants support the MDE’s Top 10 in 10 goals two, three, four, and six through several key activities.

- Engaging students in well-rounded learning experiences
- Providing coaches and mentors with professional learning opportunities and SCECHS
- Ensures equitable access to programming and resources
- Establishes partnerships with job providers, community colleges, and higher education.
The state grant closes on Nov 8, 2018.
Additionally, the Michigan Department of Education, Office of Systems, Evaluation, and Technology is responsible for the administration of several educational technology grants.
