Description: A parent or legal guardian would be allowed to take unpaid leave from their job in order to attend important scholastic events for their children, such as parent-teacher conferences, without risking their employment. The bill requires an employer to allow each employee who is a parent or legal guardian of a minor 8 hours of unpaid leave for each child per school year. Employers may require that the leave be taken in no longer than 3-hour increments and that the individual provides written verification from the district of the academic activity. Under the bill, academic activities would be considered to be parent-teacher conferences, tutoring or another activity or event related to the educational advancement of the child. individuals would be required to give 7 day’s notice of the intent to use leave for the activity. Employers may deny the use of the leave only if this would disrupt or cause unusual difficulty for the business or endanger public safety. This would not apply to independent contractors, domestic servants employed in a private home, and farm and ranch laborers.
