Session Descriptions

Threat Assessment: Prioritizing Early Detection, Intervention & Universal Student Support
Thom Jones – Senior Vice President, Threat Detection & Prevention, Navigate360 and National Threat Assessment Trainer (CSTAG)

Due to the declining mental and emotional health of youth, as well as the many societal and post-pandemic impacts seen over the last two years, we’ve been met with a particularly tragic increase in challenging student behaviors, including severe aggression, self-harm and violence. As part of a comprehensive prevention framework, schools must prioritize the tools and supports needed to detect, assess and apply customized early intervention plans that meet the individualized needs of students in crisis and get them the support they need.

This session will include Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG) training scenarios for attendees to work through, as well as these takeaways:

  • Best practices for early identification & intervention for students in crisis
  • The value of integrated threat detection & prevention tools designed to help students get the support they need
  • Why a whole-child approach that includes Suicide Awareness & Prevention, Behavioral Threat Assessment, Social-Emotional Learning, and Restorative Practices is more critical than ever

What is the MSP Office of School Safety and What Does It Do?
Kimberly Root, Manager of the Office of School Safety

The Office of School Safety was established by former Governor Rick Snyder as one of the recommendations of the 2018 School Safety Task Force. OSS is involved with several key projects designed to support safety initiatives in Michigan’s K-12 schools.

Ms. Kimberly Root serves as the manager of the Office of School Safety, a role she assumed in May. Previously, Ms. Root was the Executive Director of School Safety, Communications and Strategic Initiatives for Huron Valley Schools—a district of approximately 8,500 students in western Oakland County.
